Adventure Day – Wednesday, 26 March

Experience the feeling of cruising through valleys, between high mountains and out to the cold coastal landscape by snowmobile. Our destination is the Tempelfjord.

Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to our expedition centre. Here you get equipped with a scooter dress, boots, balaclava, helmet and mittens, before we go to the scooters that are waiting for us outside. The guide will show you how the scooter works and how to drive it – then it’s time to head out into the wilderness!

The goal for the tour is Sassenfjorden (the ‘Sassen Fjord’) and Villa Fredheim, the hunting base of the legendary trapper Hilmar Nøis. Nøis was known as the ‘King of Sassen’, and spent 38 winters on Svalbard. Many of the trapper cabins on Svalbard are of the simplest sort, but Nøis’ is an exception. It is called “Villa” Fredheim for a reason. With its flag pole, potted plants and curtains, this two storey house was a palace in comparison to the other cabins. Despite this luxurious standard, it is hard not to feel enormous respect for Nøis and his family who lived in these harsh conditions, winter after winter.

We will be traveling in different groups, see below.

If your name is together with someone else name. Then you are sharing the snowmobile. If you both have a valid driver’s license you can take turns on who is driving.

Ensure that your driver’s license is valid in Svalbard

To drive a snowmobile on Svalbard, you must have a driver’s license for passenger car/class B. The driver’s license must have been issued in a country that is a party to the Geneva Convention of 1949 or the Vienna Convention of 1968 on road traffic. The driver’s license must be valid in the issuing country.
